This will be influenced by the skill base and socio-economic status of the residents as well as the industries and employment opportunities present in the region.

Dominant groups

An analysis of the jobs held by the resident population in Ward 3 in 2016 shows the three most popular industry sectors were:

  • Health Care and Social Assistance (4,034 people or 13.4%)
  • Retail Trade (3,123 people or 10.4%)
  • Manufacturing (2,483 people or 8.3%)

In combination, these three industries employed 9,640 people in total or 32.1% of the total employed resident population.

In comparison, The Ponds employed 11.2% in Health Care and Social Assistance; 10.6% in Retail Trade; and 7.0% in Manufacturing.

The major differences between the jobs held by the population of Ward 3 and The Ponds were:

  • A larger percentage of persons employed in transport, postal and warehousing (7.9% compared to 5.3%)
  • A smaller percentage of persons employed in financial and insurance services (5.3% compared to 9.1%)
  • A smaller percentage of persons employed in professional, scientific and technical services (5.6% compared to 9.2%)
  • A smaller percentage of persons employed in education and training (5.8% compared to 8.3%)

Emerging groups

The number of employed people in Ward 3 increased by 2,905 between 2011 and 2016.

The largest changes in the jobs held by the resident population between 2011 and 2016 in Ward 3 were for those employed in:

  • Manufacturing (-860 persons)
  • Health Care and Social Assistance (+774 persons)
  • Construction (+591 persons)
  • Wholesale trade (-467 persons)
