Dominant groups

Analysis of the language used at home by the population of Ward 4 in 2021 compared to WSROC Region shows that there was a smaller proportion of people who used English only, and a larger proportion of those using a non-English language (either exclusively, or in addition to English).

Overall, 41.6% of the population used English only, and 52.2% used a non-English language, compared with 46.2% and 47.5% respectively for WSROC Region.

The dominant language used at home, other than English, in Ward 4 was Filipino/Tagalog, with 11.9% of the population, or 8,713 people using this language at home.

The major differences between the languages used at home for the population of Ward 4 and WSROC Region in 2021 were:

  • A larger percentage using Filipino/Tagalog at home (11.9% compared to 2.4%)
  • A larger percentage using Urdu at home (4.2% compared to 1.4%)
  • A smaller percentage using Vietnamese at home (0.4% compared to 3.8%)
  • A smaller percentage using Mandarin at home (0.9% compared to 3.8%)

Emerging groups

Between 2001 and 2021, the number of people who used a language other than English at home increased by 17,344 or 82.9%, and the number of people who used English only increased by 1,262 or 4.3%.

The largest changes in the languages used by the population in Ward 4 between 2001 and 2021 were for those using:

  • Urdu (+2,575 persons)
  • Filipino/Tagalog (+2,539 persons)
  • Punjabi (+2,140 persons)
  • Hindi (+1,511 persons)
