Dominant groups

Analysis of the language spoken at home by people aged 12 to 25 years in the Inner West Council in 2021 compared to Greater Sydney shows that there was a larger proportion of people who spoke English only, and a smaller proportion of those speaking a non-English language (either exclusively, or in addition to English).

Overall, 74.2% of people aged 12 to 25 years spoke English only, and 21.4% of% spoke a non-English language, compared with 61.5% and 33.4% respectively for Greater Sydney.

Other than English, the dominant language spoken at home by people aged 12 to 25 years in the Inner West Council was Mandarin, with 3.2% of the population, or 853 people speaking this language at home.

The major difference between the languages spoken at home for people aged 12 to 25 years of Inner West Council area and Greater Sydney in 2021 was:

  • A smaller percentage speaking Arabic at home (1.0% compared to 4.8%)
