People form different types of households at different stages in life, so this varies enormously by age group in all areas. This topic is useful, however, in comparing the types of households formed by each age group relative to the benchmark. For instance, in some areas, children may mostly live in couple families, while in others they are mainly in one-parent families. Are elderly parents still living with their extended family or do they have empty nester households?

Dominant groups
Analysis of the household/family types of people aged 55 to 64 years in the MidCoast Council in 2021 compared to Regional NSW, shows that there was a lower proportion of people aged 55 to 64 years in couple families with child(ren) as well as a lower proportion in one-parent families. Overall, 15.3% of people aged 55 to 64 years were in couple families with child(ren), and 8.3% were in one-parent families, compared with 20.8% and 8.8% respectively for Regional NSW.
There was a higher proportion of people aged 55 to 64 years in lone person households and a higher proportion in couples without children. Overall, the proportion of people aged 55 to 64 years in lone person households was 18.0% compared to 17.3% in Regional NSW while the proportion of couples without children was 47.1% compared to 42.7% in Regional NSW.
Emerging groups
The number of people aged 55 to 64 years in households in MidCoast Council area increased by 1,066 between 2016 and 2021.
The largest changes in family/household types for people aged 55 to 64 years in MidCoast Council area between 2016 and 2021 were:
- Couples with children (+314 persons)
- Lone person (+260 persons)
- One parent families (+248 persons)
- Couples without children (+215 persons)
