People form different types of households at different stages in life, so this varies enormously by age group in all areas. This topic is useful, however, in comparing the types of households formed by each age group relative to the benchmark. For instance, in some areas, children may mostly live in couple families, while in others they are mainly in one-parent families. Are elderly parents still living with their extended family or do they have empty nester households?

Dominant groups
Analysis of the household/family types of people aged 75 to 84 years in the MidCoast Council in 2021 compared to Regional NSW, shows that there was a lower proportion of people aged 75 to 84 years in couple families with child(ren) as well as a lower proportion in one-parent families. Overall, 4.9% of people aged 75 to 84 years were in couple families with child(ren), and 4.8% were in one-parent families, compared with 6.2% and 5.4% respectively for Regional NSW.
There was a lower proportion of people aged 75 to 84 years in lone person households and a higher proportion in couples without children. Overall, the proportion of people aged 75 to 84 years in lone person households was 26.8% compared to 28.4% in Regional NSW while the proportion of couples without children was 55.6% compared to 52.1% in Regional NSW.
Emerging groups
The number of people aged 75 to 84 years in households in MidCoast Council area increased by 2,076 between 2016 and 2021.
The largest changes in family/household types for people aged 75 to 84 years in MidCoast Council area between 2016 and 2021 were:
- Couples without children (+1,332 persons)
- Lone person (+441 persons)
- Couples with children (+118 persons)
- One parent families (+101 persons)
