In 2021, the largest age group in Taree was 60 to 64 year olds. The group that changed the most since 2006 was 85 and over year olds, increasing by 344 people.

Dominant groups

Analysis of the five year age groups of Taree in 2021 compared to MidCoast Council area shows that there was a higher proportion of people in the younger age groups (under 15) and a lower proportion of people in the older age groups (65+).

Overall, 17.7% of the population was aged between 0 and 15, and 27.4% were aged 65 years and over, compared with 14.6% and 33.2% respectively for MidCoast Council area.

The major differences between the age structure of Taree and MidCoast Council area were:

  • A larger percentage of persons aged 25 to 29 (5.5% compared to 3.8%)
  • A smaller percentage of persons aged 65 to 69 (6.2% compared to 9.1%)
  • A smaller percentage of persons aged 70 to 74 (6.6% compared to 9.2%)
  • A smaller percentage of persons aged 60 to 64 (6.7% compared to 8.8%)

Emerging groups

From 2006 to 2021, Taree's population increased by 1,178 people (7.6%). This represents an average annual population change of 0.49% per year over the period.

The largest changes in age structure in this area between 2006 and 2021 were in the age groups:

  • 85 and over (+344 persons)
  • 70 to 74 (+287 persons)
  • 75 to 79 (+224 persons)
  • 25 to 29 (+220 persons)
