More Southern Rural residents worked in health care and social assistance than any other industry in 2021.

This will be influenced by the skill base and socio-economic status of the residents as well as the industries and employment opportunities present in the region.

When viewed in conjunction with Residents Place of Work data and Method of Travel to Work, industry sector statistics provide insights into the relationship between the economic and residential role of the area.

Dominant groups

An analysis of the jobs held by the resident population in Southern Rural in 2021 shows the three most popular industry sectors were:

  • Health Care and Social Assistance (319 people or 12.8%)
  • Construction (299 people or 12.0%)
  • Agriculture, Forestry and Fishing (257 people or 10.3%)

In combination, these three industries employed 875 people in total or 35.0% of the total employed resident population.

In comparison, MidCoast Council area employed 19.4% in Health Care and Social Assistance; 10.2% in Construction; and 4.9% in Agriculture, Forestry and Fishing.

The major differences between the jobs held by the population of Southern Rural and MidCoast Council area were:

  • A larger percentage of persons employed in agriculture, forestry and fishing (10.3% compared to 4.9%)
  • A larger percentage of persons employed in transport, postal and warehousing (6.1% compared to 3.5%)
  • A smaller percentage of persons employed in health care and social assistance (12.8% compared to 19.4%)
  • A smaller percentage of persons employed in retail trade (8.0% compared to 11.1%)

The number of employed people in Southern Rural increased by 509 between 2006 and 2021.

The largest changes in the jobs held by the resident population between 2006 and 2021 in Southern Rural were for those employed in:

  • Health Care and Social Assistance (+152 persons)
  • Construction (+90 persons)
  • Education and Training (+58 persons)
