More Southern Rural male residents worked in construction than any other industry in 2021.

This will be influenced by the skill base and socio-economic status of the residents as well as the industries and employment opportunities present in the region.

When viewed in conjunction with Residents Place of Work data and Method of Travel to Work, industry sector statistics provide insights into the relationship between the economic and residential role of the area.

Dominant groups

An analysis of the jobs held by the male resident population in Southern Rural in 2021 shows the three most popular industry sectors were:

  • Construction (247 males or 18.7%)
  • Agriculture, Forestry and Fishing (166 males or 12.6%)
  • Manufacturing (135 males or 10.2%)

In combination, these three industries employed 548 males in total or 41.5% of the total employed male resident population.

In comparison, MidCoast Council area employed 18.1% in Construction; 6.8% in Agriculture, Forestry and Fishing; and 7.4% in Manufacturing.

The major differences between the jobs held by the male population of Southern Rural and MidCoast Council area were:

  • A larger percentage of males employed in agriculture, forestry and fishing (12.6% compared to 6.8%)
  • A smaller percentage of males employed in health care and social assistance (4.3% compared to 8.6%)
  • A smaller percentage of males employed in retail trade (5.8% compared to 9.1%)
  • A smaller percentage of males employed in accommodation and food services (4.7% compared to 7.8%)

The number of employed males in Southern Rural increased by 262 between 2016 and 2021.

The largest change in the jobs held by the male resident population between 2016 and 2021 in Southern Rural was for those employed in:
