More Southern Rural female residents worked in health care and social assistance than any other industry in 2021.

This will be influenced by the skill base and socio-economic status of the residents as well as the industries and employment opportunities present in the region.

When viewed in conjunction with Residents Place of Work data and Method of Travel to Work, industry sector statistics provide insights into the relationship between the economic and residential role of the area.

Dominant groups

An analysis of the jobs held by the female resident population in Southern Rural in 2021 shows the three most popular industry sectors were:

  • Health Care and Social Assistance (264 females or 22.3%)
  • Accommodation and Food Services (138 females or 11.6%)
  • Retail Trade (128 females or 10.8%)

In combination, these three industries employed 530 females in total or 44.7% of the total employed female resident population.

In comparison, MidCoast Council area employed 30.1% in Health Care and Social Assistance; 9.8% in Accommodation and Food Services; and 13.1% in Retail Trade.

The major differences between the jobs held by the female population of Southern Rural and MidCoast Council area were:

  • A larger percentage of females employed in agriculture, forestry and fishing (8.0% compared to 3.0%)
  • A smaller percentage of females employed in health care and social assistance (22.3% compared to 30.1%)
  • A smaller percentage of females employed in education and training (10.1% compared to 12.6%)
  • A smaller percentage of females employed in retail trade (10.8% compared to 13.1%)

Emerging groups

The number of employed females in Southern Rural increased by 241 between 2016 and 2021.

There were no major differences in Southern Rural between 2016 and 2021.
