Dominant groups

An analysis of the jobs held by the resident population in MidCoast Council area in 2016 shows the three most popular industry sectors were:

  • Health Care and Social Assistance (5,191 people or 17.3%)
  • Retail Trade (3,787 people or 12.6%)
  • Construction (2,846 people or 9.5%)

In combination, these three industries employed 11,824 people in total or 39.4% of the total employed resident population.

In comparison, Regional NSW employed 14.4% in Health Care and Social Assistance; 10.3% in Retail Trade; and 8.7% in Construction.

The major differences between the jobs held by the population of the MidCoast Council area and Regional NSW were:

  • A larger percentage of persons employed in health care and social assistance (17.3% compared to 14.4%)
  • A larger percentage of persons employed in retail trade (12.6% compared to 10.3%)
  • A smaller percentage of persons employed in public administration and safety (4.3% compared to 7.2%)
  • A smaller percentage of persons employed in mining (1.1% compared to 2.4%)

The number of employed people in MidCoast Council area increased by 605 between 2011 and 2016.

The largest changes in the jobs held by the resident population between 2011 and 2016 in the MidCoast Council area were for those employed in:
