The Number of Bedrooms in a dwelling is an indicator of the size of dwellings, and when combined with Dwelling Type information, provides insight into the role the MidCoast Council plays in the housing market for non-English speaking populations.
For example, where non-English speaking populations are mainly students, one bedroom and bedsitters may be dominant. Upgrader areas housing families could have larger separate dwellings, while smaller units may be common for downsizers among older migrant communities.
To the extent that there may be a mismatch between bedrooms and Household Size, this topic can also look at the potential for overcrowding in particular communities, or the availability of extra bedrooms.

Dominant groups
Analysis of the number of bedrooms in dwellings for Chinese languages speakers in the MidCoast Council in 2021 compared to Regional NSW, shows that there was a higher proportion of Chinese languages speakers in dwellings with 2 bedrooms or less, and a lower proportion of dwellings with 4 or more bedrooms.
Overall, 24.2% of Chinese languages speakers were in dwellings with 2 bedrooms or less, and 38.7% in 4 or more bedroom dwellings, compared with 19.9% and 45.9% for Regional NSW respectively.
The major differences between the number of bedrooms per dwelling Chinese languages speakers in the MidCoast Council and Regional NSW were:
- A larger percentage of people in 2 bedrooms (24.2% compared to 15.7%)
- A larger percentage of people in 3 bedrooms (37.1% compared to 32.8%)
- A smaller percentage of people in 4 bedrooms (25.8% compared to 32.2%)
- A smaller percentage of people in 0 or 1 bedrooms (0.0% compared to 4.3%)
