MidCoast Council area

Overseas born - Introduction

In 2021, there were 9,771 people [Toggles].[COIIDDisplayLabel] living in the MidCoast Council area.

This population includes anyone who stated a birthplace country other than Australia or its territories on their Census form, and can be filtered by the specific countries in the selector. These have been chosen as larger or important emerging groups in the MidCoast Council area.

Immigration is integral to Australia’s national identity, and at the 2016 Census, those born overseas made up 23% of the nation’s population. Information on migrant communities is vital for planning local government activities such as community services, library collections, translation services, as well as planning for types of dwellings and community infrastructure. Different migrant communities arrived at vastly different times in Australia’s history and have very different social characteristics, which can be explored in this module.

Data notes

For dwelling related topics (household type, household income, bedrooms etc), only household members who state an overseas birthplace are included in the table. If more than one household member was born overseas, there will be multiple counts for the same household in the table. People who did not answer the birthplace question are excluded.
