Households form the common 'economic unit' in our society. Nillumbik Shire's Household Income is one of the most important indicators of socio-economic status. When related to age, this shows the household income of the household in which the individual of that age group was counted.

They may not contain an equal number of persons in each group, and in fact, more people are generally counted in households in the highest income quartile because income is correlated with household size. However, using income quartiles effectively adjusts for inflation, allowing changes in income for the chosen age groups to be benchmarked to the state, the wider population, and shows change over time.
