The number of bedrooms in a dwelling is an indicator of the size of dwellings, and when combined with household size information, can be an indication of whether there is overcrowding in dwellings, and perhaps housing affordability and availability issues in the First Nations community in the area.
Households are counted as a First Nations household if they contain one or more Aboriginal or Torres Strait Islander usual residents on Census night. This dataset presents number of bedrooms in dwellings containing at least one Aboriginal or Torres Strait Islander usual resident. It is entirely possible and even probable in many cases that some bedrooms are occupied by non-indigenous household members or visitors.

Dominant groups
Analysis of the number of bedrooms in Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander dwellings in City of Ryde in 2021 compared to the number of bedrooms in Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander dwellings in North Sydney Council area shows that there was a lower proportion of dwellings with 2 bedrooms or less, and a higher proportion of dwellings with 4 or more bedrooms.
Overall, 40.7% of households were in dwellings with 2 bedrooms or less, and 28.8% of 4 or more bedroom dwellings, compared with 70.3% and 9.0% for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander households in North Sydney Council area respectively.
The major differences between the number of bedrooms per dwelling for the Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander population in City of Ryde and the Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander in North Sydney Council area were:
- A larger percentage of 5 bedrooms or more (11.9% compared to 1.9%)
- A larger percentage of 4 bedrooms (16.9% compared to 7.1%)
- A smaller percentage of 0 or 1 bedrooms (8.9% compared to 27.4%)
- A smaller percentage of 2 bedrooms (31.8% compared to 42.9%)
