Dominant groups
Analysis of the language spoken at home by people aged 35 to 54 years in the City of Ryde in 2021 compared to Greater Sydney shows that there was a smaller proportion of people who spoke English only, and a larger proportion of those speaking a non-English language (either exclusively, or in addition to English).
Overall, 42.4% of people aged 35 to 54 years spoke English only, and 53.9% of% spoke a non-English language, compared with 53.3% and 41.8% respectively for Greater Sydney.
Other than English, the dominant language spoken at home by people aged 35 to 54 years in the City of Ryde was Mandarin, with 14.1% of the population, or 5,134 people speaking this language at home.
The major differences between the languages spoken at home for people aged 35 to 54 years of the City of Ryde and Greater Sydney in 2021 were:
