Dominant groups
An analysis of the jobs held by the resident population in Port Melbourne in 2021 shows the three most popular industry sectors were:
- Professional, Scientific and Technical Services (1,423 people or 16.1%)
- Health Care and Social Assistance (896 people or 10.1%)
- Financial and Insurance Services (744 people or 8.4%)
In combination, these three industries employed 3,063 people in total or 34.6% of the total employed resident population.
In comparison, the City of Port Phillip employed 16.2% in Professional, Scientific and Technical Services; 11.8% in Health Care and Social Assistance; and 6.8% in Financial and Insurance Services.
The major differences between the jobs held by the population of Port Melbourne and the City of Port Phillip were:
- A larger percentage of persons employed in financial and insurance services (8.4% compared to 6.8%)
- A larger percentage of persons employed in transport, postal and warehousing (4.2% compared to 3.0%)
- A smaller percentage of persons employed in accommodation and food services (4.5% compared to 6.6%)
- A smaller percentage of persons employed in health care and social assistance (10.1% compared to 11.8%)

The largest changes in the jobs held by the resident population between 2016 and 2021 in Port Melbourne were for those employed in:
- Health Care and Social Assistance (+162 persons)
- Public Administration and Safety (+97 persons)
- Manufacturing (-86 persons)
- Wholesale trade (-78 persons)
