Dominant groups

An analysis of the jobs held by the resident population in Taree and surrounds in 2021 shows the three most popular industry sectors were:

  • Health Care and Social Assistance (2,250 people or 23.3%)
  • Retail Trade (1,194 people or 12.4%)
  • Education and Training (898 people or 9.3%)

In combination, these three industries employed 4,342 people in total or 44.9% of the total employed resident population.

In comparison, MidCoast Council area employed 19.4% in Health Care and Social Assistance; 11.1% in Retail Trade; and 8.4% in Education and Training.

The major differences between the jobs held by the population of Taree and surrounds and MidCoast Council area were:

  • A larger percentage of persons employed in health care and social assistance (23.3% compared to 19.4%)
  • A larger percentage of persons employed in retail trade (12.4% compared to 11.1%)
  • A smaller percentage of persons employed in agriculture, forestry and fishing (2.4% compared to 4.9%)
  • A smaller percentage of persons employed in construction (9.1% compared to 10.2%)

The number of employed people in Taree and surrounds increased by 1,078 between 2016 and 2021.

The largest changes in the jobs held by the resident population between 2016 and 2021 in Taree and surrounds were for those employed in:

  • Education and Training (+162 persons)
  • Public Administration and Safety (+109 persons)
