This will be influenced by the skill base and socio-economic status of the residents as well as the industries and employment opportunities present in the region.
When viewed in conjunction with Residents Place of Work data and Method of Travel to Work, industry sector statistics provide insights into the relationship between the economic and residential role of the area.

Dominant groups
An analysis of the jobs held by the resident population in Taree and surrounds in 2021 shows the three most popular industry sectors were:
- Health Care and Social Assistance (2,250 people or 23.3%)
- Retail Trade (1,194 people or 12.4%)
- Education and Training (898 people or 9.3%)
In combination, these three industries employed 4,342 people in total or 44.9% of the total employed resident population.
In comparison, MidCoast Council area employed 19.4% in Health Care and Social Assistance; 11.1% in Retail Trade; and 8.4% in Education and Training.
The major differences between the jobs held by the population of Taree and surrounds and MidCoast Council area were:
- A larger percentage of persons employed in health care and social assistance (23.3% compared to 19.4%)
- A larger percentage of persons employed in retail trade (12.4% compared to 11.1%)
- A smaller percentage of persons employed in agriculture, forestry and fishing (2.4% compared to 4.9%)
- A smaller percentage of persons employed in construction (9.1% compared to 10.2%)
Emerging groups
The number of employed people in Taree and surrounds increased by 1,078 between 2016 and 2021.
The largest changes in the jobs held by the resident population between 2016 and 2021 in Taree and surrounds were for those employed in:
- Health Care and Social Assistance (+516 persons)
- Construction (+183 persons)
- Education and Training (+162 persons)
- Public Administration and Safety (+109 persons)
