More Freshwater residents worked in professional, scientific and technical services than any other industry in 2021.

This will be influenced by the skill base and socio-economic status of the residents as well as the industries and employment opportunities present in the region.

When viewed in conjunction with Residents Place of Work data and Method of Travel to Work, industry sector statistics provide insights into the relationship between the economic and residential role of the area.

Dominant groups

An analysis of the jobs held by the resident population in Freshwater in 2021 shows the three most popular industry sectors were:

  • Professional, Scientific and Technical Services (852 people or 16.1%)
  • Health Care and Social Assistance (544 people or 10.3%)
  • Construction (521 people or 9.8%)

In combination, these three industries employed 1,917 people in total or 36.2% of the total employed resident population.

In comparison, Northern Beaches Council area employed 14.3% in Professional, Scientific and Technical Services; 11.8% in Health Care and Social Assistance; and 9.5% in Construction.

The major differences between the jobs held by the population of Freshwater and Northern Beaches Council area were:

  • A larger percentage of persons employed in professional, scientific and technical services (16.1% compared to 14.3%)
  • A larger percentage of persons employed in financial and insurance services (8.6% compared to 7.2%)
  • A smaller percentage of persons employed in retail trade (6.1% compared to 8.5%)
  • A smaller percentage of persons employed in health care and social assistance (10.3% compared to 11.8%)

Emerging groups

The number of employed people in Freshwater increased by 304 between 2016 and 2021.

The largest changes in the jobs held by the resident population between 2016 and 2021 in Freshwater were for those employed in:

  • Professional, Scientific and Technical Services (+181 persons)
  • Financial and Insurance Services (+56 persons)
